Châtel Ski Resort｜シャテル・スキーリゾート

When heavy clouds persist every day, I really miss seeing the clear blue sky. The only place you’ll find it in northern Europe is from a plane above the clouds! So I decided to escape London and headed to the French Alps. The flight from London to Geneva in Switzerland is just under 2 hours. From there, we took a train and bus to a ski resort called Châtel in France.

It’s very convenient to stay in the village at the foot of the mountain as restaurants and ski rental shops are all within walking distance. You can also reach the slopes in no time by the gondola called Super Châtel. The blue sky that I’ve become so unused to in January and the panorama of the majestic mountain range that shines in silver are more beautiful than you can imagine. You can enjoy this view while eating at the restaurant next to the slopes. As an aside, I was really surprised to find sea urchin cream pasta on the menu of a restaurant on the top of a mountain!

It’s been 3 years since I’ve been able to go skiing due to the pandemic. I rediscovered the coldness of the snow, the sharpness of the wind, the clear air and pure water of the mountains. From the bottom of my heart, I felt that my dulled senses were gradually reawakened in the midst of nature, and that it was a precious pleasure that could only be experienced in winter.

毎日曇り空ばかりが続くと、恋しくなるのは晴れ渡った青空。冬の北ヨーロッパにいながら、青空を見ることのできるところがあるとすれば、雲より高いところ。そう、ロンドンを飛び出し、向かった先はフレンチアルプスです。ロンドンの空港からスイスのジュネーブ空港まで２時間弱、そこからは陸路でフランスはシャテルというスキーリゾートへ行ってきました。

麓の村に宿泊すれば、飲食店も、スキーレンタル店も、全ては徒歩圏内にあるのでとても便利。ゲレンデにも、スーパー・シャテルというゴンドラであっという間に到着です。１月とは思えない青空と、白銀に輝く雄大な山脈のパノラマが想像以上の美しさで、なんとすぐ隣のレストランからは食事をしながらもこの景色を楽しむことができます。余談ですが、フランスらしいなと思ったのは、山の上にいるのに雲丹のクリームパスタがメニューにあるのには本当に驚きました。

パンデミックの影響で、スキーにやって来れたのは実に３年ぶり。雪の冷たさや風を切る楽しさ、山の澄んだ空気や清らかな水。鈍っていた感覚が自然の中で少しずつ研ぎ澄まされていくようで、冬ならではの貴重な楽しみだなあと、心の底から思いました。
