Legacy of the Tokyo Olympics: Japan National Stadium｜東京五輪の遺産：国立競技場

Before doing anything, I went to visit Meiji Jingu to report that I had arrived safely in Tokyo and to say hello. Chrysanthemum flowers are displayed on the approach to the shrine according to the season, and wedding ceremonies are held in the precincts, creating a very festive atmosphere.
After visiting the shrine, we headed to the National Stadium next to the Meiji Jingu Gaien. I had tickets to the Tokyo Olympics and had booked the plane ticket but, like everyone, ended up watching it on TV.
As I walked around the stadium looking at the plaques engraved with the medalists of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the cauldron, I could imagine the national athletes silently concentrating on their competitions against the backdrop of the pandemic. I also stopped by the Chichibunomiya Memorial Gallery to see the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic medals and the torch.
In this temporary return to Japan, the creativity of buildings made using domestic materials caught my attention. The National Stadium is of course an excellent design, but it also represents the heritage and symbolism of the Olympics and Paralympics. I was able to witness the possibilities of architecture using wood.
東京に無事到着したことのご報告とご挨拶を兼ねて、まずは明治神宮へお参りに行って来ました。季節柄、参道には菊の花が展示されていて、境内では結婚式も行われていたりと、とても華やいだ雰囲気です。
お参りを済ませて次に向かったのは、明治神宮外苑のお隣にある国立競技場。東京五輪は、入場券も買って航空券も予約していたのに、結局テレビ観戦になってしまったのは返す返すも残念。
２０２０東京五輪のメダリストが刻まれた銘板や、聖火台を見ながら競技場を一周していると、パンデミックの最中、各国代表選手が黙々と競技に集中していたのが静かに思い出されます。秩父宮記念ギャラリーにも立寄り、東京オリンピック・パラリンピックのメダルや聖火トーチなども見学してきました。
今回の一時帰国では、国産材を利用した創意溢れる建築物が結構目に留まりました。国立競技場はその優れた意匠はもちろんですが、オリパラの遺産であり象徴となるもの。木材を使用した建築の可能性を目の当たりにすることができました。
