Berlin Walk through filming locations of ‘Wings of Desire’｜ベルリン散策「ベルリン・天使の詩」ロケ地にも

Walking around Berlin for the first time in 15 years, I got the impression that, now more than 30 years since the reunification of East and West, the momentum of redevelopment has calmed. The opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport in 2020 was definitely a milestone. The James Simon Gallery, with its beautiful new corridor on Museum Island, was another, completed in 2019. But, as seen in the renovation of the New National Art Museum (completed in 2021), it may already be time to renovate existing facilities. The Sony Center is currently under renovation.

I visited the National Library, across from the Berliner Philharmoniker and designed by the same architect, Hans Sharon. When I was a student, I watched ‘Wings of Desire’. In the film, the library building was the home of the angels. I also climbed the Victory Monument, which was a resting place for angels. Like moments from the film, Berlin can be a bit melancholic in winter.

Increasing the amount of indoor sightseeing is a good way to cope with the cold, but as this stay coincided with a day when admissions are free, I couldn’t make a reservation to visit any museums. I look forward to when the Pergamon Museum has fully reopened, and I’m also curious about the 20th Century Museum of Art, which is being constructed next to the New National Museum. Berlin still has lots of things to keep an eye on!

１５年振りにベルリン中心部を歩きながら、東西統一から３０年以上が経過し、ベルリン再開発の勢いも中心部では大分落ち着いてきたのかなという印象を持ちました。２０２０年、ベルリン・ブランデンブルク空港の開港は、その一つの到達点だったような気がします。博物館島に新たにできた回廊が美しいジェームス・ジモン・ギャラリーが２０１９年完成。２０２１年には新国立美術館の改装が終了と、既存施設の改修等が必要になってくる時期なのかもしれません。実際、ソニーセンターは改修工事中でした。

今回、どうしても訪れたかったのは国立図書館。設計はベルリンフィルコンサートホールと同じ建築家ハンス・シャロンです。閲覧者の邪魔にならないようにそーっと館内を見学してきました。学生の頃観た「ベルリン・天使の詩」。映画の中では天使たちの住まいだった建物です。天使の休息場だった戦勝記念塔にも登ってきました。

冬のベルリンはやはりちょっと物憂げな雰囲気。屋内でも楽しめる観光を増やすと寒さにも対応できるのですが、今回はちょうど入館料が無料になる日と重なって予約が取れず美術館、博物館には行けず終い。ペルガモン博物館の完全再開も楽しみですが、新国立美術館の隣には新たに２０世紀美術館が建設中です。この先もベルリンからは目が離せません。
