Huadou’s plant-based cake with faint soy flavour｜大豆の風味がやさしい「華豆」のビーガンケーキ

I visited Berlin several times while studying in Germany. At that time, I enjoyed walking around the city, starting at Hackescher Markt station and, from there, around Oranienburger Strasse and Kastanienallee, which are a little further north. A friend of mine who works in Berlin recommended a cafe here, so I decided to walk around the area with that in mind.

As I walked around the streets, visiting fashionable general stores and clothing stores, I sometimes passed by a streetcar, which made me nostalgic for some reason, perhaps not unrelated to the fact that this area was the former East Berlin.

When I got tired of walking, I found the shop I was looking for, Huadou. The cake is made with soy milk and tofu for a light taste, mixed with the flavours of adzuki beans and matcha, and it goes well with the Chinese tea that I ordered together. If I lived in this neighbourhood, I would definitely come here again and again.

It was a short stay of 3 days, but the city of Berlin is still very interesting. New and old, east and west, motion and stillness, beauty and ugliness: Berlin’s charm is that these things coexist, sometimes merge, and sometimes contradict each other.

ドイツ留学中、ベルリンには何度か遊びに来たことがあります。当時、街歩きが楽しかったのはハッケシャー・マルクト駅を起点にそこから伸びるオラニエンブルガー通りや少し北に行ったところにあるカスタニアン通り周辺。ベルリンの会社に勤める友人がその辺りでお勧めのお店を教えてくれたので、そこを目指しながら界隈を歩いてみることにしました。

お洒落な雑貨屋や服屋などを巡りながら通りを歩いていると、時折市電とすれ違うのですが、このことになぜか懐かしさを感じるのは、この辺り一帯が旧東ベルリンだったことと無関係ではなさそうです。

歩き疲れた頃に、お目当てのお店、華豆（Ｈｕａｄｏｕ）を発見。豆乳や豆腐を使って作られたケーキは口当たりが軽いのに、小豆や抹茶の香りがしっかり感じられ、一緒に頼んだ中国茶とも良く合います。近所にあったら何度でも来るに違いありません。

３日間という短い滞在でしたが、ベルリンという街の面白さは今も健在でした。新と旧、東と西、動と静、美と醜。これらが同居しながら、時に融合、時に相反しているところがベルリンの魅力だと言えそうです。
