Awakening aesthetic exploration and curiosity at the ‘Musée Albert-Kahn et Jardins’｜美的探究心と好奇心を呼び覚ます「アルベール・カーン美術館と庭園」

This time again, we stayed at the Hilton Paris Opera in Paris. I came to the Albert Kahn Museum, which is located halfway between here and Versailles. The building, which was designed by Kengo Kuma in 2022, will naturally come into view the moment you emerge from the nearest station on subway line 10.
When you step into the entrance, which resembles the collar of a kimono, you suddenly feel a sense of darkness, but this subtle contrast of shadows can also be seen on the opposite side of the building facing the garden. The museum’s collection consists mostly of old photographs and videos taken from around the world, and the more you look at them, the more interested you become. The garden that leads to the back is also very nice, especially the Japanese garden, which has a tea room, rockery, stream, and bridge that are beautifully arranged, making it a full-fledged strolling garden. In the back, there are various gardens, including English- and French-style gardens, and you’ll be surprised at how spacious the landscape is – something you can’t imagine from the outside.
‘The world is vast and full of beautiful and interesting things.’ While exploring the vast and precious video records and lush gardens, it reaffirmed for me the importance of maintaining a sense of aesthetic exploration and curiosity. It was a wonderful opportunity to do so.
パリでの宿泊は今回もヒルトン・パリ・オペラです。こことベルサイユとのちょうど中程にあるアルベール・カーン美術館へやって来ました。２０２２年に、隈研吾氏による改修が終了した建物が、地下鉄１０号線の最寄り駅を降りた瞬間、自然と視界に入ってきます。
着物の衿合わせのような入り口に足を踏み入れると、ふっと暗さを感じるのですが、この陰影の微妙な対比は、庭園に面した建物反対側でも見られました。美術館の収蔵品は、世界各地で撮影した古い写真や映像が大半で、これが、見れば見るほど興味を掻き立てられる代物ばかり。奥に続く庭園もまた大変に素晴らしく、特に日本庭園は茶室、築山、流れ、橋が見事に配置され、本格的な回遊式庭園となっていました。その奥にはさらにイギリス式、フランス式庭園等があり、外部からは全く想像できない広さに驚きます。
「世界は広くて、美しいもの、面白いものに溢れている。」膨大かつ貴重な映像の記録と、緑深き庭園を巡りながら、美的探究心と好奇心を持ち続けることの尊さを、再認識する素晴らしい機会となりました。

Looking for somewhere to take a break after exploring the extensive exhibits and expansive gardens? As of now, there doesn’t seem to be a restaurant inside the museum, so how about Brasserie Jean Baptiste, which is right across the street? Outdoor seating looks great when the weather is nice. After a lot of hesitation, I decided to order beef carpaccio. It goes well with rosé wine. It was around noon and the place was crowded with many locals.
膨大な展示と広大な庭園を見学して、どこか休憩するところをお探しでしょうか。今のところ美術館内にはレストランが併設されていないようなので、すぐ向かいのブラッスリー・ジャン・バティストはいかがでしょうか。屋外の座席は天気が良ければ最高に気持ちよさそうです。色々迷って、牛肉のカルパッチョを注文してみました。ロゼワインとよく合います。ちょうどお昼時で、多くの地元民で賑わっていました。
