Nicosia Walk (Cyprus)｜ニコシア散策（キプロス）

Here are some interesting things I discovered while walking around the city of Nicosia.

I found a familiar sculpture in front of the Nicosia Municipality, next to the Eleftheria Square. It reminded me of Costas Varotsos’ ‘The Runner’, an iron and glass sculpture in front of the Hilton Athens (here is the link of our stay). I later researched that the Nicosia work, entitled ‘The Poet’, is by the same artist.

Towards the UN Buffer Zone, I saw locals drinking tea in the warm sunshine. Here, the beautifully maintained streets are dotted with fashionable shops; this is a corner of Nicosia that you will want to take time to visit a little more slowly.

At the Cyprus Museum, I was amazed at the wide variety of exhibits which date back some 9000 years. Some of the earliest artifacts have a style similar to ancient Japanese clay figurines; I had a mysterious feeling that some distant memories were being awakened! There were plenty of excavated statues – have fun finding one with a face similar to yourself and forge a deeper connection to the beautiful island of Cyprus!

ニコシア（キプロス統治下の南側）の街歩きをしながら興味深いと思った一部を紹介します。

エレフテリア広場のすぐ隣にあるニコシア地方行政局前に、どこかで見覚えのある作品を発見。以前、ヒルトン・アテネに泊まった時（こちらの記事）に、目が釘付けになったコスタス・ヴァローツォスのＲｕｎｎｅｒという鉄とガラスの像に良く似ているので、それと同じなのかと勘違いしてしまいましたが、こちらは、同作家による「Ｔｈｅ　Ｐｏｓｔ」という作品。

市内のあちこちで、地元の人達が暖かな日差しの下、屋外でお茶を飲む姿をよく見かけました。綺麗に整備された通りに、お洒落なお店が点在していて、ここはもう少しゆっくりと訪れてみたい一角です。

キプロス博物館では、９０００年にも及ぶ長い年月の中で残されてきた多種多様で膨大な展示に驚かされました。中には、日本の土偶に似た作風のものもあり、遠い記憶を呼び覚まされるような不思議な感覚を覚えます。是非、注意深く観察して、自分に似た顔貌（かおかたち）の出土品を見つけてみてください。キプロスがもっと身近に感じられはずです。
