Review: Hilton Berlin
I visited Berlin several times while studying in Germany. I haven’t had the chance to visit Berlin in 13 years. Berlin was said to be the largest construction site in Europe since Germany reunification, and I always look forward to following the changes every time I visit.

Arriving at the newly completed Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, I looked at the scenery from the window while heading to the centre of Berlin on a direct train.
Getting off at Friedrichstrasse station and walking south for a while, Hilton Berlin came into view.

Room
After entering the revolving door, you are greeted in a large hall with an atrium up to the second floor. The almost perfect symmetry is typical of Germany, but somewhat different from UK design.

We arrived at the hotel shivering from the cold, but inside the hotel was cosy as is normal in German houses. The room I was assigned was facing the courtyard, which was spacious, and had a calming interior. In the new Hilton hotels I’ve stayed in recently, many of the bathrooms only have showers, but the Hilton Berlin had a bathtub. It was so nice to be able to soak in hot water in this cold weather.

Breakfast
Breakfast is the most enjoyable part of a German hotel, especially because Germany has so many types of bread. When I was a student, I used to stay at youth hostels when travelling around Europe. I remembered that in Germany, even the breakfast at a youth hostel was special!

Executive Lounge
Berlin is vast. Because of the cold weather, it was difficult to walk outside for long, so it was great to return to the hotel between sightseeing. Thanks to that, I was also able to enjoy cocktail time in the lounge. There was a wide selection of German beer and wine. We were very satisfied with the quality and also quantity of food selection which was decent, more substantial than nibbles and snacks.

Swimming pool and sauna
The beginning of March is still mid-winter in Berlin, but if you want to warm up, you can use the hotel’s gym and sauna. A pool and gym are also available.
Useful information
The nearest station for Deutsche Bahn and S-Bahn is Friedrissistraße Station. It’s a little far, but I think it’s walkable distance if you don’t have much luggage. On the way to the hotel on Friedrich Straße, you can stop by Galeries Lafayette which is French department store.
If you have access to the lounge, be sure to visit during cocktail hour. There was a wide selection of items, and there was enough for a light meal. Don’t forget to try the German sparkling wine, Sekt.
