Review: Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria

Fifteen years after I threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain and asked for a return to Rome, I was able to visit the Eternal City again. This time we were excited to stay at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria

The aircraft we boarded at London Heathrow Airport landed on time at Rome Fiumicino Airport. There are several ways to get from the airport to the hotel, but since there were three of us traveling, we decided to take a taxi. It took just under an hour and cost approximately 50 euros.

There is also a limited express train called the Leonardo Express that goes directly from the airport to Rome Termini Station without stopping at any stations along the way. This costs 14 Euros and takes 30 minutes to get to Termini Station. There is no convenient way to get to the hotel from here, and it is difficult to use public transportation with large luggage, so a taxi may be the best option. Please refer to useful Information below for details of the shuttle bus operated by the hotel.

Room

The hotel is located on Rome’s highest hill, Monte Mario, and we were guided to a room on an upper floor with an incredible view over the city from the veranda.

Since we were three people, we asked for an extra bed, and a staff member came immediately and set it up in the living space between the balcony and the bed. The bathroom was lavishly decorated with marble, making it feel very luxurious.

The paintings and decorations in the Rome Cavalieri are wonderful, and it’s sometimes easy to forget that this is a hotel.

View of the eternal city

If you want slightly higher still, we recommend going to the La Pergola restaurant on the top floor. Sipping a cocktail while watching the city at twilight change from amber to madder to indigo will heal any tiredness from your journey.

The balcony overlooks a well-kept garden, tennis courts and an outdoor pool, all set in breathtaking vast green grounds.

Spa

However, your most blissful time in this hotel will probably be spent in the indoor spa facility.Although I’m not really sure whether the water is carried by an ancient Roman aqueduct, you can certainly imagine that when stepping into the luxurious spa, which only adds to the experience.

Breakfast

Breakfast is a real pleasure, with a rich and colourful selection of sweet treats. If the season is good, please take a seat by the outdoor pool and enjoy breakfast while basking in the morning sun.

Useful information

The hotel’s shuttle bus runs between the hotel and Piazza Barberini. Line A of the metro passes through Piazza Barberini. Line A also has Termini Station, Spagna Station close to Piazza di Spagna, and Ottaviano Station, the closest station to the Vatican Museums, making it a convenient route for sightseeing.

The shuttle bus timetable is posted on the official website, but the number of buses may vary depending on the season and holidays, so please check with the hotel.
