Enjoying Scottish nature and local food, from Ballater to Muick｜スコットランドの自然と食を満喫 バラターからミュイック湖へ

Craigendarroch Suites are located within woodland, so I didn’t realise until I looked at the map that there was a town nearby. This is Ballater, a small village on the banks of the River Dee. The whole village is surrounded by the clean air brought by the river, and it is very calming. You could stop on the bridge and forever be mesmerised by the flow of the river and its murmuring sounds.

The Craigendarroch Suites are nice, but if you want to stay in town, the Balmoral Arms looked good. This time we decided just to have lunch here. The hotel building is made of granite, a stone produced in this part of ​​Aberdeenshire, and it has a strong yet dignified appearance. Enjoy Scottish specialties such as salmon and venison by the open fire.

Balmoral Castle is probably the most famous attraction near the Craigendarroch Suites. This is the British royal residence where the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth stayed every year as her summer retreat (The photo of the castle below was taken on a previous visit).

When I visited here, Balmoral Castle was closed due to mourning, but this area, known as Royal Deeside, is one of the most scenic spots in the national park.  I decided to go to Lake Muick, which is about 30 minutes away by car.

On arrival, stop by visitor centre to gather information.  Learn about the flora and fauna that inhabit the area and the characteristics of each season, and check the topography and things to be aware of.  It takes several hours to go around the lake.

In Scotland, which is at a high latitude, the heating is already on at the beginning of October.  It’s even colder at the lakeside, and if you’re going to hike for a long time, you’ll need cold-weather gear.  I returned to the car shivering, but I was able to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery typical of Scotland.  Next time, I would expect to meet a grouse, renowned as the character of the whisky The Famous Grouse.

クレイゲンダーロッホ・スイートは森の中にあるので、歩いて数十分の距離にこんな所があるなんて地図をよく見るまで気づきませんでした。ここは、バラターという、ディー川の畔にある小さな村。川が運んでくる清浄な空気に村全体が包まれていて、とても落ち着きます。

橋の上で立ち止まり、せせらぎに耳を傾けていると、いつまでも川の流れを眺めていたくなります。

クレイゲンダーロッホ・スイートも素敵ですが、もし町中に泊まりたいというのであれば、バルモラル・アームズというホテルも良さそうです。今回は、ここでお昼ご飯とすることにしました。ホテルの建物はアバーデーンシャーというこの辺りで産出される花崗岩の造りで、重厚ながらも気品のある佇まいです。スコットランドの特産である鮭や鹿肉など、暖炉の炎にあたりながらゆっくり味わってみてください。

クレイゲンダーロッホ・スイートに近く、最も有名な観光名所と言えばバルモラル城ではないでしょうか。ここは、先日亡くなったエリザベス女王が避暑地先として毎年滞在していた英王室の離宮です（写真は以前訪問した時の撮影）。

残念ながら、ここを訪れた時にはバルモラル城は喪中のため閉鎖中でしたが、ロイヤル・ディーサイドと言われるこの辺りは国立公園の中でも風光明媚な所。車で３０分位の所にあるミュイック湖まで行ってみることにしました。

まずはビジターセンターで情報収集。付近に棲息する動植物や季節ごとの特徴を学び、地形や気をつけるべき事項を確認。湖は一周すると数時間はかかるとのことで、時間の関係上、今回は湖の全景を眺められる地点まで行ってみようということにしました。

緯度の高いスコットランド、１０月の始めでも既に暖房が入っています。湖畔はさらに寒く、長時間のハイキングなら、それなりの防寒装備が必要だと思い知らされました。ぶるぶる震えながら車に戻りましたが、スコットランドらしい美しい自然風景を楽しむことができました。次回は、ウイスキーのフェイマス・グラウスでお馴染みの雷鳥に出会えるのを期待したいと思います。
