First taste of orange wine at ‘Spry’ wine bar in Edinburgh｜エジンバラのワインバー「スプライ」でオレンジワインを初体験

Just a few days before we arrived in Edinburgh we heard that the Edinburgh Tram had been extended to Leith, so we were excited to use it. While travelling on the new section, I noticed a nice-looking wine bar from the tram window and decided to go back later for dinner.
The wines provided in the bar are made from grapes grown by natural farming methods in various parts of Europe. I found that some were surprisingly produced in England. I was curious to try them, but this time I chose an orange wine as I had not tried it before. Although it was listed as one of the white wines on the menu, the taste was different from other white wines and I felt that it had more depth.
The food is mainly small plates that are designed to be enjoyed with wine. I was so impressed by the ingredients and presentation, which made me want to try recreating it at home! (If you make a reservation, you can also ask for a 5-course set menu.)
Whenever I visit Edinburgh, I discover many sophisticated restaurants and bars despite the city not being that large compared to other cities in the UK. As the capital of Scotland, I cannot help but feel the cultural richness that this city has accumulated every time I come across wonderful places like Spry.
今回エジンバラにやってくるつい数日前にエジンバラ市電が延伸されたと聞き、早速乗車してきました。新区間を移動中、感じのよさそうなワインバーを車窓から発見。晩御飯がてら入ってみることにしました。
ヨーロッパ各地で自然農法により栽培された葡萄から作られたワインの中には、意外にもイギリスで生産されたものもいくつかあるのを発見。機会があれば是非試してみたいと思いつつ、今回はちょっと変わったもので、オレンジワインを選択。メニューでは白ワインの中にあったけれど、味は白ワインとはやはり異なって、深みがあるように感じました。
お料理も、あくまでお酒を楽しむことを前提とした小皿が中心。素材の選び方も盛り付けの仕方も、こんな風に料理してみたいなぁと思えるようなもので、もちろんお味の方もとても凝っていて大満足でした。（予約すれば、コース料理で頼むこともできるようです。）
エジンバラに来て思うのは、街の規模は英国内でもそれほど大きくないのに、都会的で洗練されたレストランやバーが多いなぁということ。やはりスコットランドの首都なんだなぁと思うと同時に、このような素敵なお店に出会う度、この街が蓄積してきた文化的豊かさを感じずにはいられません。
