A completely new concept whisky distillery: ‘Macallan Estate’｜全く新しい構想のウイスキー蒸溜所「マカラン・エステイト」

Slightly over an hour’s drive from Hilton Aberdeen TECA, just as you’re getting used to the Scottish countryside, a unique building suddenly appears. I came to the distillery of Macallan whisky. It blends in well with its surroundings and looks unlike any distillery I have seen before.
The green roof has an undulating shape that mimics the topography of Speyside and, at first glance, gives the illusion that it is connected to the surrounding landscape. From inside the building, you can clearly see the elaborate, lattice-like timber structure of the roof which forms a gentle undulation. The pillars that support the roof are also thoughtfully placed to make the space feel wider; you can see that the distillery was built with the latest construction technology.
Like many other distilleries, Macallan also offers tours, so I decided to join one. The exhibition uses lots of technology which perfectly matches the architecture of the distillery. After learning about whisky in depth, I wanted to take a break and have a drink at the bar, but I had a car, so I gave up. Instead, I went to restaurant on the first floor and had a meal made with Scottish ingredients. There is also a distillery shop, so please take plenty of time and enjoy the world of Macallan that can only be experienced here.
ヒルトン・アバディーン・テカから車で１時間強、スコットランドの田園風景にも見慣れてきた頃、ふっと現れる建物。マッカランウイスキーの蒸溜所にやって来ました。周囲の風景にうまく溶け込んでいて、これまで見た、どの蒸溜所とも異なる外観です。
緑化された屋根は、スペイサイドの地形を模したかのような起伏のある形状をしていて、一見、周囲と地続きになっているのではないかと錯覚します。この緩やかな起伏、建物内からだと格子状の木製部材が精巧に組み込まれているのがよく見えます。構造を支える柱も、空間を広く取るために考えられて配置されており、技術の粋が詰め込まれて建てられたのが分かります。
他の多くの蒸溜所同様、マッカランでも見学を行っているということで、勿論参加することにしました。展示の見せ方も説明の仕方も、新しい蒸溜所の印象にぴったり。ウイスキーについて深く学んだ後は、一休みも兼ねて、併設のバーで一杯といきたかったのですか、車があったので断念。一階にレストランがあったので、スコットランド産の食材で作られた食事を頂くことにしました。お店ではお土産を買うこともできるので、是非時間をたっぷりとって、ここでしか体験できないマッカランの世界観を堪能してみてください。
