The first thing that always strikes me when I visit museums in the UK is the overwhelming amount of exhibits, not to mention the age and provenance of the collections. From ancient times to the present, all sorts of things collected from all corners of the world are on display, so you will never run out of interest. I think that the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh is worth seeing as much as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. I learned that both buildings were designed by Francis Fowke.
Science, art, history, fashion and culture; exhibits are covered like an encyclopedia. It’s impossible to see everything in a few hours, so next time I’ll take a break at the restaurant inside the museum and take my time.
イギリスの博物館を訪れるといつも圧倒されるのは、まずは展示物の圧倒的な物量。そして収蔵品の年代と収集元。太古の昔から今に至るまで、世界の隅々から集められたありとあらゆるものたちが縦横無尽に展示されているので、興味が尽きることがありません。ここ、スコットランド国立博物館もロンドンのビクトリア・アンド・アルバート美術館に負けじと劣らず一見の価値があると思います。聞けば、建築は両館ともフランシス・フォークによるものとか。
科学、芸術、歴史、服飾、文化。展示物が百科事典のように網羅されています。数時間で全てを見て回ることは無理なので、次回は博物館内のレストランで休憩しつつ、ゆっくり時間をかけて訪れようと思います。
