Feeling the sea breeze while walking in Belem District in Lisbon｜海風が気持ち良い リスボン、べレン地区を散策

As you walk up and down the narrow, undulating streets of Lisbon’s old town, your eyes will occasionally be drawn to the beautiful, bright blue horizon that peeks through the gaps between the buildings. At first glance, the waterfront looks like the ocean, but when you check it on a map, it turns out to be the mouth of the Tagus River.

When I got down to Plaza de Commerce, I could see the Tagus River right in front of me, but I wanted to feel the Atlantic Ocean even closer, so I decided to board the tram and head towards the Belém area. The railroad runs parallel to a wide road and, unlike the undulating old town, the scenery is flat and open.

The first place I visited was a restaurant called SUD Lisbon, recommended by a new friend I met while travelling. From the lounge bar on the first floor, I was able to enjoy the view of the April 25th Bridge while quenching my thirst. According to my friend, this is also the best place to watch the sunset.

After taking a break, I visited a streamlined building called MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) right next to SUD Lisbon. The countless white tiles that are used to finish the arched form of the museum stand out beautifully against the blue sky.

Our next destination was the Monument to Discovery. It was very nice to take a walk along the Tagus River in such fine weather, but I left the riverside here and headed in the direction of Jeronimos Monastery and the Maritime Museum.

Our final destination in Belém was Pastéis de Belém, the birthplace of egg tarts. Since I arrived in Lisbon, I had already tasted some egg tarts, but the freshly baked egg tarts in Belém are just delicious. The slightly browned yellow gives a strong impression of Lisbon, reminding me of the colour of the walls of Commerce Square and of the trams.

リスボンは、旧市街の細くて起伏のある道を上り下りしていると、時折、建物の隙間から、はっとするような美しく真っ青な水平線に目が奪われます。一見、海のようにも見える水辺は、地図で確認するとテージョ川の河口なのですね。

コメルシオ広場まで降りると、テージョ川を目の前にぱっと視界が開けるのですが、大西洋の大海原をもっと近くで感じてみたくなり、市電に乗り込み、ベレン地区へと向かうことにしました。幅員の広い道路に並行して鉄道も走っており、起伏の激しい旧市街とは全く異なり、平坦で開けた景色です。

最初に訪れたのは、旅先で出会った新しい友人のお勧めでＳＵＤリスボンというレストラン。２階のラウンジバーからは４月２５日橋が見事に見渡すことができました。渇いた喉を潤しながら、暫く景色を堪能。友人曰く、ここは夕日を眺めるのにも最高なのだそう。

休憩後は、ＳＵＤリスボンのすぐ隣にあるＭＡＡＭＴ（芸術・建築・技術博物館）という流線形の建物を外部から見学しました。躯体の仕上げに使われている無数の白いタイルが、青い空に良く映えています。

その次に目指したのは発見のモニュメント。テージョ川沿いは、晴天の下、散歩するのがとても気持ち良かったのですが、ここで川沿いから外れ、ジェロニモス修道院や海洋博物館の方角へと向かいました。

ベレン地区、最終目的地は、エッグタルト発祥のお店、パスティス・デ・ベレン。リスボンに来てから、エッグタルトは既に幾つか賞味していたけれど、沢山歩いた後の焼きたてエッグタルトは、美味しさも一入（ひとしお）。少し焦げ目のついた黄色は、コメルシオ広場の壁の色や、市電の車体の色と共に、リスボンの色として強く印象に残っています。
