Ski holiday: From Milan to the Alpine Town of Bormio
Transportation is always a headache on a ski holiday. Since I’m going from London, I don’t use a car, but fly to a nearby destination and then travel by train or bus from there. One of the reasons I chose Bormio for my ski holiday this time was because an Italian friend who knows Bormio well recommended it. As he said, it was easy to travel from Milan to Bormio by train and bus.
In this article, I’ve written in detail about things that we didn’t know when we were doing our research. I’ve explained it so that even if it’s your first time, you can get there without getting lost. In addition, I’ve introduced some recommended places to stay, so if you’re considering a ski holiday in Bormio, please read to the end.

Milan Central Station to Tirano station
After checking out of the hotel, we walked to Milan Central Station and boarded the train to Tirano. The final destination is Bormio, but you can take the train to Tirano Station and the bus from there.
To go from Milan to Tirano, take a train operated by Trenord. When buying a ticket, please go to the Trenord counter, not the Trenitalia counter. Please note that they are next to each other and it is easy to get confused.

After leaving Milan Station, we drove on the plains on the outskirts of Milan for a while, but after passing Lecco, a town on the shores of Lake Como, we began to approach the mountains. Until then, many trees such as cypresses, olives, grapes, apples, and laurels were seen, but after entering the mountains, white birch, pine, and Japanese larch became more prominent. At the same time, mountains with snow-capped peaks came into view.

Change from train to bus at Tirano station
It takes 2.5 hours to get from Milan Central Station to Tirano Station. The train itself runs once an hour, but the number of buses that you need to change to in Tirano is not that frequent. It’s best to check the timetable and take a train with good connections. However, there is a possibility that the train may be canceled suddenly (in fact, the train we were trying to take was canceled and we had to wait for the next train at Milan Station), so it might be a good idea to arrive in Tirano with plenty of time to spare.

Tirano station is the last stop for the Trenitalia (formerly Italian National Railways), but it is also the starting station for the famous Bernina Express. I considered transferring to the Bernina Express and seeing the snow-covered mountain scenery of Switzerland, but this time I decided to hurry and boarded the express bus to Bormio. I was wondering what kind of mountain road we would be traveling on, but there were several well-maintained tunnels in a row, and we arrived at Bormio in about 40 minutes. Most likely, non-fast buses will also take the old road and stop at stops in smaller villages. About 3 and a half hours after leaving Milan, we safely arrived in Bormio, where we will be staying on this ski trip.

The bus stop is on the south side of the railway line. The station is open and has many shops on the north side. The Bernina Express station is also on the north side.

There are weekdays, Saturdays, and holidays, and weekdays and Saturdays seem to differ depending on whether the school is in term or not. A70 is the bus route number to Bormio.
Recommended accommodation
Since we are here to ski, it will be easier to get around if we stay near the lifts.
First, most people will take the Bormio-Bormio 2000 lift, so please understand this, the town center, and the bus stop before narrowing down your accommodation.
You can rent ski equipment at the foot of the mountain, but there is also a proper rental shop at the top of the mountain. It is a pain to walk to the lift with your skis on, so I recommend renting at the top.
We chose Hotel Meublè Sertorelli Reit. It is a few minutes walk to the town’s central square (Centro Storico di Bormio) and about 15 minutes to the lift station. The rental shop is on the mountain, so it was no problem to walk a short distance between the hotel and the lift. After skiing, we could walk through the town and stop by the supermarket, so it was convenient.
Bormio has a variety of accommodations, both large and small, so please look for one that suits your requirements. Hotel Meublè Sertorelli Reit is a very cozy and stylish hotel with a warm atmosphere that you can only get from a family-run hotel. The rooms were warm with good floor heating, the breakfast was plentiful, and I looked forward to having croissants every day.
