Review: Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda – A Designer Hotel Full of Osaka Character, Newly Opened in Umekita

I visited Osaka during the Expo period, and every time I come, the area around Osaka Station seems to be transforming. This hotel stands right in the heart of that ever-changing district. Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda, a new brand in the Hilton family, is a designer hotel that combines an unbeatable location—just a few minutes’ walk from Osaka Station—with the lush greenery of a nearby park.

As a Diamond member, I stayed for two nights, enjoying not only an upgraded room and breakfast but also dinner at the hotel restaurant. In this post, I’ll share my experience, from how to get there to the overall atmosphere, with plenty of photos throughout.

In recent years, Hilton’s presence in Osaka has expanded rapidly—with the long-standing Hilton Osaka now joined by Waldorf Astoria Osaka, Conrad Osaka, and DoubleTree by Hilton Osaka Castle. Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda marks the very first Canopy property in Japan. If you’re considering where to stay in Osaka, this stylish new option is definitely worth checking out.

How to Get to the Hotel

From Shin-Osaka, Osaka, and Umeda Stations

If you’re arriving in Osaka by Shinkansen, transfer at Shin-Osaka Station to the JR Kyoto Line and get off at Osaka Station.

The hotel is within walking distance from both Osaka and Umeda Stations. It’s convenient to walk through Grand Front Osaka, as it provides shelter from rain, wind, and heat — a nice shortcut. However, if you’re carrying large luggage, it’s best to avoid this route as it can get crowded and you may obstruct others. In that case, take the Umekita Underground Exit, then walk north along the pavement and you’ll soon see the hotel ahead.

From Itami Airport (Osaka International Airport)

If you’re travelling light, the train is the most efficient option, with frequent connections.
Take the Osaka Monorail to Senri-Chuo Station, then transfer to the Kita-Osaka Kyuko Line, which connects directly to the Subway Midosuji Line, and get off at Umeda Station.

If you have large luggage, the limousine bus is a more comfortable choice.
Depending on the bus company, the drop-off location around Osaka Station varies. The Hankyu Kanko Bus stops in front of the Hotel New Hankyu, which is the most convenient stop for reaching the hotel.

You can check the limousine bus timetable here.

From Kansai International Airport (KIX)

From Kansai Airport, you can take either the Limited Express “Haruka” or the Kansai Airport Rapid Serviceoperated by JR, both of which go directly to Osaka Station without transfers. The Haruka takes about 60 minutes, while the Rapid takes around 75 minutes, so the difference isn’t huge — but if you’re carrying heavy luggage, the Limited Express Haruka offers a much more comfortable ride.

Prime Location in the Heart of the Umekita Redevelopment District

The area where the hotel now stands was once occupied by the Umeda Freight Station and its related facilities, but everything has changed dramatically since the Umekita Redevelopment Project began in 2010. I remember visiting the Umeda Sky Building around the year 2000 for an appointment nearby — at that time, it was hard to imagine that the entire district would one day transform into what it is today.

If Grand Front Osaka represents the first phase of the Umekita redevelopment, then the second phase includes Umekita Park, the opening of Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda, and the new art museum VS. (Visual Space).

During my stay at the hotel, I visited the ongoing exhibition “Tadao Ando: Seishun (Youth)” at VS.
By chance, I was able to attend both a book signing and a talk session by Tadao Ando himself — an inspiring and unforgettable experience.

Guest Rooms – Full of Character and Thoughtful Design

Check-in takes place on the 11th floor of the building. Since I entered from the ground floor, I took the elevator up to the lobby.

The first thing that caught my eye was a see-saw. The material looked like old railway sleepers, a subtle nod to the site’s history as a former freight station. The concept behind it, I was told, was to create a place where people can gather, interact, and have fun together — much like a park.

I was assigned a Premium View Room, kindly upgraded as a Hilton Diamond member. From the lobby, I took another elevator up to the 19th floor. The lights illuminating each room’s entrance were designed in the shape of plum blossoms (ume) — a charming detail referencing the name “Umeda.”

Opening the door to a new hotel room is always exciting, and this time was no exception. The interior was beautifully crafted, full of stylish touches — lighting, furniture, and bathroom tiles all reflecting a playful yet refined sense of design. Simply stunning.

Thanks to the upgrade, the bathroom also came with a bathtub. I thought I wouldn’t use it much in the hot season, but since I was back in Japan for a short visit, I couldn’t resist taking a proper bath — it was such a relaxing moment.

The mini-bar area was beautifully designed — don’t you think? I initially thought it was a refrigerator, but when I opened it, I found a stylishly arranged interior that completely surprised me.

As a Hilton Diamond member, I was also given a small welcome gift, which was a lovely touch. The Fukusuke doll wasn’t part of the gift, but it was placed in the room as a symbol of good fortune, almost as if it were there to greet me — of course, I couldn’t resist taking a photo with it. The doll’s blue colour is said to represent Osaka as the “City of Water.”

From the room, I could enjoy a panoramic view of Umekita Park and central Osaka — open and spacious, with a surprising sense of calm despite being right next to Osaka Station.

If you find yourself curious about the design motifs scattered throughout the hotel, I highly recommend reading the explanations on the official website. I discovered it only after returning to London, and as I went through it, I was amazed at how thoughtfully everything had been designed. At the same time, I realised I had instinctively photographed many of those details — perhaps I have a good eye after all! That’s how visually engaging this hotel is — every corner is a delight to photograph.

Dinner at the Hotel Restaurant

For dinner, I chose the hotel’s in-house restaurant, located on the 11th floor. I started with a local craft beer from Takatsuki, Osaka, and ordered several small dishes — more like bar snacks than a formal meal. Among them, the edamame hummus was absolutely delicious — definitely worth trying if you visit.

While dining, I noticed an inviting-looking outdoor terrace through the window, so I stepped outside after my meal to take a closer look. It turned out to be a beautifully designed open-air space — calm and relaxing, with greenery all around. During my stay, the weather was simply too hot, even after sunset, so I didn’t linger outside. But in a cooler season, it would be a perfect spot to unwind with a drink.

From the terrace, I could clearly see the Umeda Sky Building, which used to feel so distant and isolated. With the ongoing redevelopment of the area, it now seems much closer and more connected to the rest of the city. There was even a DJ booth, suggesting that live music might be played on certain evenings — adding to the vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere.

A Taste of Osaka – An Impressive and Indulgent Breakfast

One of the highlights I was most looking forward to was breakfast at Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda. As a Hilton Diamond member, I was guided to a lovely table towards the back of the restaurant — it had a great view to start the morning.

The selection was truly extensive — Japanese, Western, and even a few Chinese dishes. You’ll definitely be spoilt for choice, so I recommend coming with an empty stomach!

Speaking of Japanese dishes, are you team Kansai-style or Kanto-style when it comes to rolled omelettes (tamagoyaki)? The Kansai version, seasoned with dashi broth, was absolutely delicious and something I highly recommend trying. There were also plenty of local Osaka specialties such as okonomiyaki, takoyaki, and kushikatsu, making it impossible to sample everything in just one morning.

When I was about to stop myself from overeating, a friendly staff member reminded me that my Diamond benefit included a complimentary dessert — the hotel’s popular “Zabuton Mont Blanc.” It was beautifully crafted, almost too pretty to eat. Needless to say, I ended up indulging a bit more than planned!

To fully enjoy such a rich and satisfying breakfast, it’s best to keep your morning schedule open and treat it as a brunch experience. I stayed for two nights this time, but honestly, I wished I could have stayed one more — the thought only grew stronger after returning to London.

Hotel Gym

The hotel also features a fitness centre, perfect for guests who want to stay active during their stay. Working out while enjoying the panoramic view of Umeda’s skyscrapers makes for a memorable experience.

Useful Information – Benefits for Gold and Diamond Members

Although Canopy by Hilton Osaka Umeda doesn’t have an executive lounge, Diamond members are invited to enjoy drinks and light snacks during the Golden Hour (daily from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it back to the hotel during that time as I was visiting the Expo, but I’d love to experience it on my next stay.

Did you know that Gold and Diamond members receive 25% off food and beverage purchases at the hotel restaurant and bar? The offer is time-limited, but it has been extended several times — so it’s worth checking the official Hilton website before your stay to confirm the current details.
