Hotel Review: Hilton Vienna Plaza – Complimentary Upgrade to a Penthouse Room! Executive Lounge and Breakfast Review

I often find myself longing for Vienna every autumn. The last time I visited was in 2010, and after 14 years, I finally had the chance to return—this time in the very season I had always hoped to experience it, thanks to a work trip.

During this visit, I stayed at two of Vienna’s most iconic Hilton hotels, and I’m sharing both stays in a series of reviews. In my previous post, I wrote about Hilton Vienna Park (you can read that review here), and in this article, I’ll take you through my stay at Hilton Vienna Plaza, including the complimentary upgrade experience, room details, Executive Lounge, and breakfast.

Access|Recommended routes from the airport to the hotel

It took about 2 hours to get to Vienna Airport from London. From here, it is convenient to take the direct train to Wien Mitte, the City Airport Train (CAT), or the slightly longer suburban train (S-Bahn No. 7).

Both trains run every 30 minutes, so you can decide when you arrive at the airport station. Please check the ticket machine before you buy because you will need completely different tickets.

If you have a lot of luggage, the most convenient way to get from Mitte Station to the hotel is to take a taxi. You could take the metro (U4) at Mitte Station, but you have to walk more than 10 minutes from the closest station (Schottenring) to the hotel.

By the way, it is best to avoid carrying large luggage on trams or buses.

Room|Penthouse Room upgrade experience

I had originally booked the most basic room, but the day before check-in, I received a notification from the hotel about an upgrade, so I was really looking forward to seeing what kind of room it would be.

I was shown to a penthouse room on the top floor. When I opened the window, I could step out onto the balcony.

The weather was perfect, and I was thrilled to see not only the cityscape of Vienna but also as far as Kahlenberg Hill.

Executive Lounge|Enjoy Austrian wines with a view

The Executive Lounge is a quiet and peaceful space where you can enjoy light snacks and drinks. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing, and as a Diamond member, access was complimentary.

The lounge offers Austrian beers and wines, along with soups and various snacks that are more than enough for a light meal.

Time spent in the lounge is always special, and this time as well, it provided a luxurious moment that helped ease the fatigue from my travels.

Émile Bar|Using the Diamond member drink voucher

After relaxing in the lounge, I decided to visit the Émile Bar, as the hotel had given me a free drink voucher. I can’t recall the name of the cocktail, but it had a refined and elegant flavour.

I was captivated by the bartender’s skillful technique. The final touch of lemon added a refreshing aroma to the drink. For my second drink, I ordered Sekt, Austrian sparkling wine. As indicated by ‘Brut,’ it was crisp and dry, exactly to my taste.

Breakfast|Delicious Viennese breads to start the day

The hotel’s breakfast buffet had a wide variety of options, including fresh fruits, a selection of Austrian breads, and freshly made egg dishes.

Breakfast was served at Émile, where I had visited the night before. It was a relaxed and luxurious way to start the morning, in a calm and comfortable atmosphere.

Useful information|Tips for saving on public transport in Vienna

When travelling within Vienna, you will likely have many opportunities to use the subway, trams, buses, and sometimes suburban trains (S-Bahn). It’s a hassle to buy a single ticket multiple times, so I think it’s more convenient and economical to buy a 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, or 7-day ticket. This will be valid for all of the above-mentioned transportation.

Also, if you are taking the S7 (S-Bahn number 7) or Railjet that connects to the airport, this ticket is valid within Vienna, so you only need to buy an additional ticket for outside the city. If you show your ticket at the station counter, they will sell you any additional tickets you need to complete your journey. For more information, please see here.
