Azure Sky and Sea – Summer Holidays in Nice, Southern France｜紺碧の空と海、南仏ニースで過ごす夏休み
How about heading to the south of France, Nice, for your summer holiday? It’s a scenic city close to Italy, and you can enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean Sea just a short walk from the city center. There are flights from Paris and other places, so transportation is excellent. Even if you don’t plan on going into the sea, there are plenty of places to eat, shop, and visit museums, so I think it’s a city you can enjoy all year round, depending on your purpose.
夏休みの行き先に、南仏ニースはいかがでしょうか。イタリアにも程近い風光明媚な街で、街中から少し歩けば地中海での海水浴も楽しめます。パリだけでなく各地からの飛行機も就航していて、交通の便も文句なし。海に入るつもりがなくても、食はもちろん、お買い物、美術館も充実しているので、目的に応じて一年中楽しめる街だと思います。

After a short stay in Paris, it was finally time to move to my main destination, Nice. Although it would have been quicker to fly, I had never travelled across France by land, so I decided to take the high-speed TGV train. Incidentally, in May 2023, a law will come into force that prohibits air routes within France if the distance is less than two and a half hours by train. The purpose of this regulation is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nice is not subject to this regulation, as it takes more than four and a half hours by the fastest train.
It was very convenient to get to Gare de Lyon, where the TGV departs, from the Hilton Paris Opera by subway line 14 or RER line A without having to transfer.
Although it was a high-speed train, it was only fast up to Marseille. From there to Nice, it seemed like the train was on a conventional line, so it wasn’t able to go very fast, but since the route ran along the coast, I was able to enjoy occasional glimpses of the Mediterranean scenery.
The train arrived safely at Nice station, more than an hour late. (There was a refund system for delays, but it was a coupon valid for one year rather than a cash refund. I used this the following year when I travelled from Geneva to Paris. You can read my travel diary here.) It was a sunny day when I left Paris that morning, but Nice also had a gorgeous blue sky without a single cloud. The reason the sky in the south of France looks a deeper blue may be because it is reflecting the colour of the Cote d’Azur.
パリでの短い滞在の後は、いよいよ、一番の目的地、ニースへ移動です。飛行機のほうが早く移動できたかもしれませんが、フランス国内を縦断するかたちで陸路移動したことがなかったので、高速鉄道TGVに乗ってみることにしました。因みに2023年の5月、フランス国内を移動する際、鉄道で2時間半以内の距離であれば航空路線を運行することが禁止される法律が施行されています。この規制、温室効果ガスの削減が目的とのこと。ニースへは、最速でも鉄道で4時間半以上かかるため、この規制の対象ではありません。
TGVが出発するパリ・リヨン駅までは、ヒルトン・パリ・オペラから地下鉄14号線、RERのA線どちらを利用しても乗り換えなしで行けるのでとても便利でした。
高速鉄道とはいうものの、快速だったのは途中のマルセイユまで。そこからニースまでは在来線の線路に乗り入れだったのか、速度はそんなに出せないようでしたが、海沿いを走る経路だったので、時折り見せる地中海の景色を横目で楽しむことができました。
列車はニース駅に1時間以上の遅れで無事到着。（遅延による返金制度はありましたが、現金の払い戻しではなく、1年有効のクーポンでした。これを使ったのが翌年のジュネーブからパリの移動でした。その時の旅行記はこちら。）朝、パリを出た時も晴天でしたが、ニースも雲1つない見事な青空。南仏の空の方がより深い青に見えるのは、コートダジュール「紺碧海岸」の色が反射しているからなのかもしれません。
Accommodation｜宿泊先
At the time, there were no Hilton hotels in Nice, so I stayed at the Holiday Inn Nice. It was located halfway between the station and the central square, so I could walk there even while carrying my luggage, and it was also within walking distance of the city centre, so the location was good and I had a comfortable stay. If you are planning to swim in the sea in Nice in the summer, you can use Ruhl Plage, which is affiliated with the hotel, at a discounted price, so why not inquire at the hotel? Sun loungers with parasols are popular during peak season, so it’s best to go early to secure one. Sunbathing and swimming in the Mediterranean is definitely one of the things you should do in summer.
The beach in Nice is made of pebbles, not sand, so it hurts to walk barefoot, so it’s a good idea to wear sandals.
The tram station right in front of Holiday Inn Nice is about 30 minutes from Nice Airport (Cote d’Azur Airport) without transfers, so it was very convenient and well connected to the airport.
ニースには、ヒルトン系列ホテルが当時はなく、泊まったのはホリデー・イン・ニースでした。駅と街の中心広場との中間くらいに位置していて、駅から荷物を運びながらでも歩ける距離だし、ここから街の中心部までも徒歩圏内と、立地も良く快適な滞在となりました。夏にニースで海水浴を計画している場合は、ホテルと提携しているルール・プラージュ（Ruhl Plage）を割引き価格で利用できるようなのでホテルで問い合わせてみては。パラソルのあるサン・ラウンジャー、繁忙期は人気なので早めに行って確保するのが良さそうです。地中海での日光浴や海水浴は、夏であれば是非してみたいことの1つではないでしょうか。
ニースの浜は、砂ではなく小石のため、裸足で歩くと痛いのでサンダルを履いていくのが良さそう。
ホリデー・イン・ニースのすぐ目の前にある路面電車の駅から、ニース空港（コート・ダジュール空港）まで、乗り換えなしで30分ほどと、空港との連絡も良く、とても便利でした。
Summer Sale｜夏のセール
It was the summer sale period in France, and I discovered that Galeries Lafayette, which I missed in Paris due to lack of time, was also here in Nice. I was able to buy some sale items, and there was also a Nice souvenir shop on the ground floor, so I was able to buy a painting I liked. The convenient thing about department stores is that you can do all the tax-free procedures in one place. Don’t forget your passport and the credit card you will use for the refund, which are required for the procedure.
ちょうどフランスは夏のセール期間中で、パリでは時間がなくて行きそびれたギャラリー・ラファイエットが、ここニースにもあるのを発見。セール品を買うことができたうえ、1階にはニースのお土産屋さんも入っていて、気に入った絵を購入することができました。百貨店の便利なところは、免税手続きがまとめてできることです。手続きに必要なパスポートと払戻し先のクレジットカードをお忘れなく。
Food｜食事
Food in Nice is influenced by the fact that this area was once an Italian territory, and there are many Italian restaurants, or rather, it seems that almost all the restaurants are Italian. There are many restaurants in Cours Saleya, as well as an open-air market selling cute miscellaneous goods and souvenirs, so it seems like a good idea to wander around and go into a shop with an atmosphere you like. After your meal, be sure to try some gelato. The ice cream at a shop called Fenocchio was as delicious as rumoured.
ニースは、この辺りが昔イタリア領だったことの影響らしいのですが、イタリア料理屋さんが多く、というか、目に入ってくるレストランはイタリア料理しかないのでは、というほどです。可愛らしい雑貨やお土産などが売られている青空市場のあるサレヤ広場（Cours Saleya）にはレストランも多数あったので、ぶらぶらしながら気に入った雰囲気のお店に入ってみるのが良さそうです。食後には是非ジェラートも。フェノッキオ（Fenocchio）というお店のアイスクリームは噂通りの美味しさでした。

I climbed Colline du Château, a small hill east of Cours Saleya (apparently there is an elevator). The sun was strong, but the promenade was well maintained and easy to walk on, and most importantly, the shade of the trees and the spray from the big waterfall made it surprisingly cool. From the top, you can see the cityscape of Nice, the long coast that stretches like a bay, and the Promenade des Anglais that runs parallel to it; you will never get bored of looking at the view. That day, a band was performing in the square on the hill, and even after 7pm, the sunshine was still bright and everyone was dancing freely to the music.
サレヤ広場の東にある小高い丘、コリーヌ・ド・シャトーに登ってみました（エレベーターもあるそうです）。日差しは強かったのですが、遊歩道は整備されていて歩きやすく、なにより樹木が作り出す木陰や、大きな滝からの水飛沫（しぶき）のお陰で、意外と涼しさを感じることもできました。上からは、ニースの街並み、長く湾のようになってずっと続く海岸と、それに並行して伸びるプロムナード・デ・サングレを見渡すことができ、いつまで見ていても飽きません。丘の上の広場では、この日、音楽隊による演奏があり、19時過てもまだまだ明るい日差しの下、皆、音楽に合わせて自由に踊っていました。
Museums｜美術館
There are many interesting museums in Nice, but due to time constraints, I narrowed it down to two. The first museum I went to was the Matisse Museum. In addition to Matisse, I also saw David Hockney’s paintings at a special exhibition. There are many elegant mansions in the surrounding area, and there is a garden next to the museum, so it was a very calming place. It is a bit far to walk here, so I recommend taking a bus. It is about a 20-minute bus ride from Place Masséna.
ニースには面白そうな美術館が多くあって、時間の都合で2館に絞って訪れてみました。 1館目は、マティス美術館。マティスのほかに、特別展でデイビッド・ホックニーの絵画も鑑賞してきました。 周辺は瀟洒な邸宅が多く建っていて、美術館の隣には庭園もあってとても落ち着いた雰囲気の場所でした。ここは歩いて行くにはちょっと距離があるので、バスに乗るのが良いと思います。マセナ広場（Place Maséna）から、バスで20分程です。
After the Matisse Museum, we visited the Nice Museum of Asian Art. The building, designed by Kenzo Tange, is well maintained and the precious collection of Oriental art is carefully stored and displayed. The huge museums in Paris are wonderful, but I prefer small museums where you can carefully appreciate each work. Since it is close to the airport and I was flying back to London, I stopped by before going to the airport, and it was very interesting, including the architecture.
What I realised after coming here this time is that Nice is a place where you can enjoy swimming in the sea in the summer, but it is actually a place you can enjoy all year round. I would like to take my time and visit other museums and nearby sights next time.
マティス美術館の次に訪れたのは、ニース東洋美術館。丹下健三氏の設計という建物は、維持管理が行き届いていて、東洋美術の貴重な収蔵品が大切に保管、展示されていました。パリにある巨大美術館も素晴らしいけど、それぞれの作品をじっくり鑑賞できる小規模な美術館のほうがどちらかと言えば好みです。空港に近く、ロンドンに戻るのが飛行機利用だったので、空港へ行く前に立ち寄れるからと来てみましたが、建築も含め、とても興味深いものでした。
今回来てみて思ったのは、ニースは夏であれば海水浴も楽しめるけど、実は年間を通して楽しめる所。またゆっくりと別の美術館や近郊の見所を回ってみたいと思っています。
