Immerse yourself in the classical atmosphere: ‘Grand Cafe’ in Edinburgh｜エジンバラでヨーロッパの古典的雰囲気に浸る「グランド・カフェ」

When walking around Edinburgh, you’ll notice stairs, alleys and lanes between the buildings, often leading to terraces overlooking the street you were just walking along. To me, it feels like moving through a three-dimensional painting or model.
It suddenly started to rain while we were walking around the Old Town, so we decided to go into a cafe we were passing by, but we didn’t realise that this cafe was exactly that kind of location until we went inside.
There is a bridge called North Bridge that straddles Waverley Station, Edinburgh’s central station. Although the cafe is on the same level as the bridge, the first floor of the building is on the same level as the railway below. I thought it was strange that there were windows on the way down to the restroom!
The café has a bright and airy atmosphere that makes it feel like you are in a corner of Vienna, and the double-height space up to the mezzanine floor adds to the sense of openness. What I thought was jazz coming from high-quality speakers was actually a live band on the mezzanine balcony.
It’s easy to miss the time to eat when you’re walking around town, but it’s nice to slow down a little and have a cup of tea. This time, Edinburgh’s only weakness, the rainy weather, led us to a lovely cafe.
エジンバラの市街を歩いていると、建物の隙間に階段があって、そこを昇るとさっきまで歩いていた通りを見下ろせるテラスが開けていたりと、まるで立体絵画や模型の中を移動しているような気がしてきます。
旧市街散策中に突然雨が降り出したので、通りかかったところにあったカフェに入ることにしましたが、このカフェがまさにそのような立地だとは中に入るまでは全く気づきませんでした。
エジンバラの中央駅にあたるウェーバリー駅を跨ぐようにかかるノース・ブリッジという橋があるのですが、カフェは橋とそれに続く道路と同じレベルにあるのに、建物の一階部分は鉄路と同じレベルです。お手洗いに行くため、下へ下へ降りて行くのに窓があるのでおかしいなと思ったのはそのためでした。
カフェは、まるでウィーンの一角にあるような明るい軽やかさがあり、中二階まで突き抜けの天井が開放感を増しています。高品質なスピーカーから聞こえてくると思ったジャズは、中二階バルコニーで生演奏のバンドからでした。
観光で街を歩き回っていると、つい食事する時間すら逃しがちですが、少し速度を緩めて、紅茶を飲みながらゆっくりするのも良いものです。
今回は、エジンバラ唯一の弱点である雨がちな天気が素敵なカフェに導いてくれました。
